A forked carrot

Forking or fanging is usually caused by adding manure or compost to the soil shortly before seed sowing. Other causes are growing carrots in stony soil or in heavy ground which has not been properly dug.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

Roots are forked into more than one main tip.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

None.

Prevention[edit | edit source]

Use land which has been manured for a previous crop. Sift soil to produce a fine, stoneless tilth. Don't firm bed after digging.
