Marsh mallow is a species of flowering plant indigenous to Africa, which is used as a medicinal and ornamental plant. A confection made from the root since ancient Egyptian time evolved into today's marshmallow treat. The modern treat contains only sugar in common with the original, which involved sugar heated with water and a mucilage from the plant's roots.[1]

Growing[edit | edit source]

Location[edit | edit source]

Grow in a site that receives full sun.[1]

Soil[edit | edit source]

Soil should be moist and moderately fertile.[1]

Planting[edit | edit source]

Roots should be planted 30cm (1ft) apart in their first season and thinned to 60cm (2ft) in their second. The plants are not suitable for growing indoors.[1]

Harvesting[edit | edit source]

Collect seeds when ripe, leaves can be picked as required and roots should be dug up in autumn.[1]

Preserving[edit | edit source]

Dry seeds and leaves. Roots should be scraped dry or made into a syrup.[1]
