Grey mould on tomato fruit
Scientific Classification
Kingdom: | Fungi |
Phylum: | Ascomycota |
Subphylum: | Pezizomycotina |
Class: | Leotiomycetes |
Order: | Helotiales |
Family: | Sclerotiniaceae |
Genus: | Botryotinia |
Species: | Botrytis cinerea and Botrytis fabae |
Grey mould or gray mold (Botrytis cinerea) is a fungal pathogen of plants with a wide variety of hosts. B. cinerea is also a cause of damping off in seedlings.
Identifying Features[edit | edit source]
Grey mould usually starts on a damaged area of stem. Other parts of the plant may then be infected - diseased flower stalks cause fruit drop.
Treatment[edit | edit source]
Cut out diseased areas and remove all rotting parts.
Prevention[edit | edit source]
Reduce humidity by adequate ventilation and avoid overcrowding. Remove decaying leaves and fruit. No systemic sprays are available.
